Rooms at Deetjen’s are romantic and rustic, decorated with treasures from the past. Our quality beds feature linens as often found in fine European hotels. Rooms look out onto lush redwood forest in the front canyon as well as the Inn’s well-tended gardens.
The Inn is a time-honored spot for honeymoons, anniversaries, and intimate gatherings of family and friends. Our hope is that, to quote a journal entry from a guest in 1955, that you "arrive here as a stranger but depart as a friend."
We maintain this peaceful environment miles away from the energy of modern life. Please know that we have no televisions, internet access nor telephones in the rooms, and no cell phone coverage on the property.
Our historic buildings have single-wall construction and are far from soundproof. Five of our most historic rooms in the Hayloft Hostel (built in the 1930’s) share two bathrooms. All other rooms have private bathrooms.

A reminder that Deetjen's is a rustic, historic Inn, with a small, dedicated staff, available from 11:00am to 4pm to assist you in finding the best room for your stay.
Our mission is to preserve, rehabilitate, and revitalize historic Deetjen's Big Sur Inn and to maintain the original character of the Inn’s architecture, the grounds, and the unique experience for generations to come; and to protect the Inn's designation on the National Register of Historic Places; and to provide deep and meaningful work for residents in and around Big Sur. In keeping with our mission, Deetjen's is suitable for individuals, couples, and small family gatherings. Our apologies that we do not offer destination wedding services nor elopements. An incidental fee of $150/room-night may be charged for groups that book as individuals.
Payment
Payment is taken in-full at the time of booking. If you cancel at least fourteen (14) days before your arrival the payment is refundable or transferable and a 10% processing fee is applied. If you cancel within 14 days of your scheduled arrival your payment is non-refundable.
COVID-19
If you are diagnosed with Covid-19 and cannot travel you may change the date of your stay for no additional charge. If you request a refund the 10% processing fee is applied.
Deetjen’s Inc, is committed to the preservation of the Inn’s buildings and the representation of a Big Sur lifestyle that serves the community-at-large.
- Check-in time is 4 pm and checkout time is 12:00 noon.
- All rooms are non-smoking.
- We require a two-night minimum stay on weekends and holidays.
- Rooms are subject Monterey County taxes.
- To ensure a tranquil stay for all of our guests, we ask that everyone be quiet after 10pm and before 8am.
- We do not have rollaway beds.
- If there are more than 2 guests per room, we charge a $25 housekeeping fee for each additional guest. By order of the Fire Marshal over occupying a room is prohibited by law.
