Property Update

With a huge breath of relief, I am pleased to announce that the organizations governing Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn have come to an agreement and Deetjen’s is graced with the chance to reopen.
For decades Deetjen’s has been an experience about Big Sur; the history; the flavor; and the characters.
Deetjen’s is dedicated to continuing the experience of Big Sur that is intentionally disconnected from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world. Deetjen’s is dedicated to the unique historic experience that has always been offered here.
Teetering on the precipice of demise has shown a bright light on what Deetjen’s means to so many of you, our friends and lovers from around the world.
You have demanded an avenue to help Deetjen’s rise again. I am thrilled to present you all with that opportunity and to be a key part in the next book in Deetjen’s Anthology.
In order to address the immediate and forthcoming needs of the Inn we must plant the seeds for capital expenses concurrent to opening the doors to the public.
- We must address some systematic and structural concerns
- We must complete the restoration of the units damaged by the winter storms in 2017
- We must fortify our water systems against the perils of aging and disrepair
- We must ensure that we are protected against imminent wild fire danger
- We must repair and preserve the buildings that are the unique historic site that Deetjen’s non-profit is charged with preserving
The future of the Inn is bright with you on our side. Please consider a donation to help Deetjen’s reopening and continue into the future.
With Honor, Vision, and Commitment,
Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn

Reconstruction of our damaged guest rooms, Stokes & Faraway, is planned in three phases. Phase one will be the cleanup and stability of the remains of Stokes & Faraway. This phase will be complete February 7. During this period you may hear some hammers, drills, and other small noises coming from the southern most structures on the property. Phase 2 will be the repair of the floor, framing of the walls and reconstruction of the roof. During this phase of construction you may hear more tools and hammering, saws, and other equipment; phase two is scheduled to be complete March 31. Phase three of the construction will be the interior finishing and board and bat reconstruction of the exterior. During this phase of construction you may hear repetitive hammering and nailing, some saw work, and some other construction equipment. Construction noise will be confined to 9:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
We can’t begin to thank you enough for your support of Deetjen’s and your flexibility and understanding during this essential time as we march forward with our mission, preserving the Inn for generations to come.
At Your Service with Gratitude

In 2017 California was hit by massive storms. The Big Sur community had already been battling many road slides and flooding. On January 22nd a slide wiped out the Creekhouse with two rooms, Upper and Lower Creek, but nature wasn’t finished. Two weeks later a redwood tree fell on the Stokes building damaging the two rooms beyond simple repair.
Here we are in 2020, and after finally receiving the permits to rebuild, the Stokes and Faraway rooms are near completion. We invite you to enjoy a pictorial gallery documenting the progress made during the past few months. We look forward to having the Stokes and Faraway rooms available to reserve this August.
